GAN Awards 2015
“5th December 2015 in Cologne saw the launch of a new national body for cricket in Germany. The Deutsche Cricket Union (DCU) was introduced at the annual Gala and Awards Night (GAN 2015) of the North-Rhine Westphalia Cricket Union (NRWCU) and founded with the aim of bringing a fresh approach to growing the sport and raising standards acrossthe country. This new organisation believes that Germany has a large untapped potential with respect to cricket and that the sport can also make a positive contribution to efforts addressing some of the issues generated by the fast rate of social change.
GAN 2015 and the launch of the DCU were supported by ICC President Zaheer Abbas and other legends of the cricket world Madan Lal and John Holder who along with current inspirational and rising stars Imran Nazir, Moeen Ali, Jason Roy and Chris Jordan; Derbyshire CCC CEO Simon Storey, John Simpson on behalf of Middlesex CCC MD Angus Fraser and England PD Head Coach Qasim Ali also presented achievement awards to local clubs, individuals and youngsters for their outstanding performances in the NRW PL and cross-border youth competitions respectively.
Since the establishment of the NRWCU Academy in 2014 with help from Kabir Ali and Gulfraz Diaz of the Club Cricket Conference, young players have begun to make rapid progress with some already beginning to graduate into the senior league. Now with the support of official German bodies and the prospect of new facilities, the outlook for growth at grassroots level, where demand already outstrips supply, also looks very bright.
The evening was not solely about cricket and the evening’s host, BBC Radio 1 and Asian Network presenter Nihal Athanayke, engaged the audience between the speeches and award ceremonies which were also interspersed with light shows and performances by Bollywood dancers and singers as well as refreshment in the form of a large selection of South Asian cuisine.
As Ankur Desai of BBC London Sport along with representatives of ARY TV and Sanam TV, conducted interviews with key attendees discussing their hopes and plans for ensuring the future well-being of cricket, it became clear that an overriding aim of those present, was for the establishment or reinforcement of networks helping to grow the game in new territories whilst reinvigorating it in the traditional heartlands of the sport where in recent years playing numbers have fallen. To this end it was a very successful evening made possible thanks to the support of the above listed players, ex-players and officials of the international cricket community as well as that of Atul Patel, Gummy Dulku and Mahesh Raika of Fusion food chain Wrapchic, Sharuka Wickrama Adittiya Manager of Sri Lankan Airways Germany,Nihal Samarasinhghe Director of Frankfurt Ramada, Call point Mr Selvarajah Daivendran and Kandiah Baskaran from Lebara Mobile.
All in all, it was a great evening for cricket with a fully packed house of 700 guests and the expectation that next year’s event will be even better!

Am Samstag, den 05.12 20:15, fand in Hürth im Eventpalast zum zweiten Mal die “Gala Avard Night” mit ca 700 Gästen statt. Mit Preisverleihung, Einzel und Mannschafts – Preise, Verbandsgründung, Bollywood Tanz und einem warmen Buffet.
Im Vordergrund stand die Gründung eines neuen nationalen Cricket Verbandes, die “Deutsche Cricket Union.e.V” (DCU), dessen 1.Vorssitzender Herr Ravi Navaratnam ist.
Anwesend waren der Präsident des Cricket Weltverbandes Zaheer Abbas sowie eine große Anzahl international bekannter Cricketspieler wie Imran Nazir, Moeen Ali, Jason Roy und Chris Jordan, CEO Simon Storey vom Derbyshire CCC, John Simpson für Middlesex CCC MD Angus Fraser und Qasim Ali Head Coach England PD
Durch das Programm führte der Moderator, Nihal Athanayke von BBC Radio 1 und Asian Network, Ankur Desai von BBC London Sport führte zusammen mit Vertretern von ARY TV und Sanam TV Interviews durch.

“Am vergangenen Samstag wurde ein neuer nationaler Cricketverband in Deutschland präsentiert. Auf der jährlichen Gala and Awards Night (GAN 2015) der North-Rhine Westphalia Cricket Union (NRWCU) wurde die Deutsche Cricket Union (DCU) vorgestellt und gegründet, um den Sport über eine neue Herangehensweise zu fördern und die Standards im ganzen Land zu heben. Diese neue Organisation ist der Meinung, dass es in Deutschland ein großes Potenzial für den Cricketsport gibt und dass der Sport auch einen positiven Beitrag zu den Bemühungen leisten kann, einige Probleme zu bewältigen, die im Zuge des raschen sozialen Wandels entstanden sind.
GAN 2015 und die Präsentation des DCU wurden von ICC Präsident Zaheer Abbas und anderen internationalen Cricketlegenden, Madan Lal und John Holder, unterstützt, die zusammen mit derzeitig inspirierenden und angehenden berühmten Spielern, wie Imran Nazir, Moeen Ali, Jason Roy und Chris Jordan, CEO Simon Storey vom Derbyshire CCC, John Simpson für Middlesex CCC MD Angus Fraser und Qasim Ali Head Coach England PD ebenfalls Leistungsauszeichnungen an lokale Vereine, Einzelpersonen und den Nachwuchs für hervorragende Leistungen in der NRW PL bzw. landesübergreifende Jugendwettbewerbe überreichten.
Seit der Gründung der NRWCU Academy 2014 mit der Unterstützung von Kabir Ali und Gulfraz Diaz der Club Cricket Conference, haben junge Spieler einen rasanten Fortschritt gemacht, und einige wechseln bereits in die Seniorliga. Jetzt, mit der Unterstützung von offiziellen deutschen Verbänden und der Aussicht auf neue Einrichtungen, ist die Perspektive, von der Basis aus zu wachsen, wobei die Nachfrage den Bedarf bereits übertroffen hat, sehr gut.
Der Abend drehte sich jedoch nicht nur um Cricket, und der Moderator, Nihal Athanayke von BBC Radio 1 und Asian Network, unterhielt das Publikum zwischen den Reden und Preisverleihungen, die auch durch Lichtshows und Auftritte von Bollywood-Tänzern und Sängern aufgelockert wurden; außerdem gab es eine große Auswahl an südasiatischen Speisen.
Ankur Desai von BBC London Sport führte zusammen mit Vertretern von ARY TV und Sanam TV Interviews mit wichtigen Teilnehmern über die Hoffnungen und Pläne für eine sichere künftige Entwicklung des Cricketsports, und es stellte sich heraus, dass die Anwesenden das oberste Ziel darin sehen, Netzwerke aufzubauen bzw. zu verstärken, um das Spiel in neuen Gebieten zu fördern und es in den traditionellen Kernländern des Sports, wo in den letzten Jahren die Anzahl der Spiele zurückgegangen ist, neu zu beleben. In diesem Sinne war es ein sehr erfolgreicher Abend, der mit der Unterstützung der oben genannten Spieler, ehemaligen Spieler und Funktionäre der internationalen Cricketgemeinschaft, sowie von Atul Patel, Gummy Dulku und Mahesh Raika von Wrapchic und Kandiah Baskaran von Lebara Mobile möglich gemacht wurde. Insgesamt war es ein großartiger Abend für den Cricketsport mit 700 Gästen im Saal und der Erwartung, dass das kommende Jahr noch besser werden wird!
