About Us

“My approach to cricket has been reasonably simple: it was about giving everything to the team, it was about playing with dignity and it was about upholding the spirit of the game. I hope I have done some of that. I have failed at times, but I have never stopped trying.” – Rahul Dravid

Formed in 2002, the NRWCU has been ground-breaking in the way it has established itself as a cricket league in Germany. They can now boast a league of 15 teams most of whom are self-funded thus highlighting the unequivocal dedication to the sport. Recent success at our 2014 GALA Awards night which included high profile guests such as Ravi Bopara and Andrew Hall, demonstrates the rising path which we are currently on, as well as the coverage and support we receive.

It has been extremely difficult for us to conceive and maintain this league for the many years we have done so, as cricket has struggled to gain traction in Germany over the years. Fundamental questions exist as to whether cricket in Germany is destined to remain almost exclusively in the preserve of expats from major cricket countries, playing in ever fewer grounds while the next generation get absorbed by the all-pervading lure of football, or if somehow the potential offered by this sports-mad land of 80 million with the world’s 4th largest economy can to some extent be realised.

Despite consistent success on the cricket field, it became apparent in order to sustain further develop and gain new facilities, that fundamental change would be necessary and a process of reform was initiated some four years ago. Stressing the need for constitutional and structural reform, the essentials of financial transparency, accountability and the observance of the rights of the membership were re-emphasised as fundamental required of any modern sporting structure fit to work with sports, educational and governmental institutions across Germany and beyond its borders. This has been an arduous road and the path of reform inevitably encountered resistance but we now have the foundation necessary to build on in order to significantly grow cricket from the grassroots up in a sustainable way.
